Winter Is Here: What to Do When It Gets Dark Early

January 22, 2024

Winter is one of those seasons that can be a mixed bag. On one hand, you have the holidays, hot cocoa, and a general feeling of coziness that is hard to beat. On the other hand, it gets dark ridiculously early, it’s cold (even in the South), and there’s not much to do outside of work. If you’re feeling cooped up and uninspired this winter, we have some tips to help you make the most of this season.

The first thing to do when you’re feeling cooped up is to embrace the cozy vibes. Invest in some cozy blankets, light some candles, and make some hot beverages. If you have a fireplace, even better! Take advantage of the downtime to read a book or watch a movie. Just remember that relaxation is important, even if it feels like you’re doing nothing at all.

But lest you start to feel like a sloth (and who hasn’t felt like that in winter?), try to mix things up with some fun activities with your family. This can be as simple as playing a board game together or engaging in a video game that the kids love. You could also try doing something outside of your normal routine like going for a bike ride or taking a walk together.

Another good idea? Spontaneity! Give yourself permission to do something every so often that you wouldn’t normally do. This could be something as small as ordering a pizza on a weeknight or going to a movie on a non-traditional day. These little breaks in routine can do wonders for breaking up the monotony of the season.

Lastly, if you’re feeling really frustrated with your living situation (hello, tiny apartment), consider renting a self-storage unit to help clear up some space. This can be especially helpful if you have kids and their stuff is starting to take over your home. It’s amazing how much better you can feel when you have some breathing room.

Winter can be a tough season, but it doesn’t have to be a total drag. Embrace the coziness, mix up your routine with some fun activities, and give yourself permission to be spontaneous. Remember to embrace the season and schedule some fun things to do, even if it does get dark early and cold outside.
